The Michel Cottage was built on or around 1924 by Florian J. Michel and was later added on to in 1946. It replaced a former cottage owned by JP Guidry tracking back all the way to 1841. The original cottage was part of the Guidry property facing Lessard St. once owned by Dominick Gentile who purchased it from the Guidry Family who inherited it at the death of JP Guidry’s wife. Mr. JP Guidry purchased the property from Seraphine Lamobileier in 1850. It is interesting to note as a part of African American history, that prior to the abolition of slavery in 1865, Seraphine Lamobileier, a “free woman of color” as depicted in Ascension Parish’s legal records, purchased the property from Jacques Francious, alias Claude, a free man of color, in 1841. The Michel Cottage has been lovingly renovated with central HVAC and heat, beautiful wood floors, modern appliances, and comfortable furnishings.
